I am trying to find the number of rows in a csv file that have above a certain value. The code I have goes something like
This works well for smaller files but for large csv files(1 GB or more) it will run forever. Is there any better way to parse csv files like this in powershell?

Import-Csv is the official cmdlet for this. One comment though, everything imported is a string, so you better cast the Value property to the correct type. For instance:

For speed when processing large files consider using a streamreader, Roman's answer here demonstrates usage.

The term
'Invoke-MySqlQuery' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again

You are missing module or software which is needed to interact with Powershell. Please check this: Querying MySQL Database with Powershell
Vladimir BundaloVladimir Bundalo
The error means the module is either not installed/present on your machine or has not been imported into the powershell session.
What does Get-Module display?

When I fire up powershell it takes ~10-15 seconds to init and give me a prompt. Anyone know what it's doing when you first fire it up that might contribute to that? This is XP Pro, 2 GB of memory, only Outlook and Firefox running interactively, fairly straight-up.

The Powershell team has a fix for this on their blog.
Content of the script from the site mentioned Update-gac.ps1

Do you have a flaky/missing internet connection?
Could depend on Windows Security trying to contact certificate authority to the get the certificate revoke list. If there is no internet connection, you'll have to wait for the timeout.
Edit:
You could try to debug this using Sysinternal's(/Microsoft's) Process Explorer. Maybe you can see which resources are accessed by the process.

How long does it take to immediately start up another instance? Vintage amati tenor saxophone serial numbers.
If much quicker, then you are seeing the time it takes to load .NET, PSH and Snapins. If not, then likely to be profile related (either PSH profile or something like contacting AD1).
1 I've see this with PSCX's AD provider when working remotely.

You can read Excel files via Oledb or Excel COM interface.
Take a look at this Scripting Guys' article. A brief copy-and-paste for the Oledb alternative:

Powershell can connect into MySql quite easily via .Net, if you have installed Mysql.Net connector.

Unfortunately, the ISE is not a full-on console host, and does not handle interactive console applications properly. If you try to run a built-in interactive console app, like netsh.exe, you'll get an error like this:
Other commands, like mySQL, will just hang indefinitely, since the ISE cannot properly handle user input to the application. You can read more about this limitation here:PowerShell Team blog.
